I think the idea is that we've shored up the defence now, so we'll be aiming for 0-0 in every game, which should just see us over the line in May.

Anyway, the latest loser striker we've been linked to is Blackburn's Ben Brererton Diaz.  The thing I like most about our Ben is that he was plain Ben Brererton from Stoke until he got picked for Chile, at which point he added his mum's name in the style of his new international team-mates and became much more exotic sounding.  Probably added about £5m to his value too.  I mean Ben Brererton from Stoke is a bit nothing, but it makes us sound like the RS if we're signing a 23 year old South American.  Be a bit of a surprise when he turns up at Finch Farm and they greet him in Spanish.  He doesn't speak a word of the language.

I think everyone should add an extra Spanish name, cos it sounds cool and exotic. Danny Higginbotham might have got a dream move to Spain if he were called Danny Higginbotham Santillana.

I'm changing my name to Rotterdam 1985 Gonzalez.

I've seen Brereton (Dias) play a couple of times. For Chile, actually. He's alright I suppose.

In the name of the research I took to YouTube and watched all his goals from last season. The ones he scored for Chile are all great. The ones from Blackburn are a mixed bag. Signing off, Tonteau Sanchez-Lopez-Rodriguez-Smith

Besiktas president Ahmet Nur Cebi has revealed Dele Alli won’t be returning to the club this summer after he failed to meet expectations.
“Our contract with Dele Alli is over. He was a player we were very excited about when he came. He won’t come back. We didn’t get what we expected from him. I hope he recovers as a human.”

Some interesting context for where Dele finds himself right now. Don’t judge a man till you’ve walked a mile in his shoes and all that.

Yep. I haven't seen that vid in full yet but I've read about it and seen snippets. Kind of puts that famous chat with Mourinho into a different light, when Jose is telling him that he'll have regrets if he doesn't maximise his potential etc.

I don't want this to sound like I'm having a pop at Mourinho - I don't have much of the context around that little video snippet, and for all I know he might be a really good "arm around the shoulder" manager in the background. But thinking back now, that chat does feel and sound like Mourinho doing what he's known for doing, which is telling people stuff, trying to drop these little motivational pearls of wisdom into the conversation.

Maybe - and again, I don't know all the context and don't know much about Dele's struggles other than what I've read today - but maybe it would have been better if the likes of Mourinho ask people things, rather than tell them things all the time. Perhaps a better people-management approach from Jose here would have been to simply ask "how can I help you?" Telling someone to work harder and be the best person and player they can be yada yada doesn't necessarily work when you have these kinds of issues. In fact it's more likely do create an even deeper pit of despair.

Well, to paraphrase Dele himself, you can't live live looking in the rear view mirror. He's still young enough to turn things around. Hopefully this interview with G Nev (and the US rehab) will be cathartic for him, from where he can hit the reset button and move forward positively. Nice to read that he thinks Everton have been very supportive.

And yet....he had to speak about this sooner than he wanted, because the tabloids got wind of the fact he was in rehab. Scumbags. But turning that negative into a positive, he took control of that by speaking publicly before they could enhance their scoop with a load of damaging old bollocks. That's a start, like - feeling that you're in control of things.

There remains that £10m payment to Spurs if he plays another 10 games hanging over us. Essentially that would be a 10-game trial. And we might not have the £10m available anyway.

Yeah that's an obvious issue. Would be a lovely story if he gets back to his best at Everton, but sometimes (well always) life is more important than football. I'd like to think tha as a club, we will continue to support him and regardless of what he achieves in football, he is successful in the rest of his life.

I was going tomato th same point. I knew of Huw we were at Cardiff together (different colleges) and he went school with lads I was playing rugby with. Really, genuinely decent chap.

The broader "House of Cards" sense I get is that Huw was pure collateral damage of News International (Sky, Times, Sun, New York Post, Fox, TalkTV) wanting to hit the BBC because its in their interests and politically convenient. The Mail ad the Telegraph also have vested interest in reducing the BBC and its effectiveness.
The Sun has actually produced ZERO evidence. The estranged family were never described as thus. They changed their story (or did they?) and the piece de resistance The Sun finally gaslights the media by claiming they never intimated criminal misdoings. It was delightful to hear the second Headline that they created blasted onto R5Live this morning and a pregnant pause from the Sun representative.

The BBC - I hop recognises that just like Saville, Harris were really bad apples in terms of handling a story this affair represents the other end of the spectrum and that lessons learned about aggressive reporting (Cliff Richard story and the doorstepping) is directed onto more productive energy in fighting back and holding the mirror into the likes of News International, Fox News and Sky TV.

In no aspect of 20th/21st Century has Murdoch involvement generally proved to a good idea for all in the long run.

On the Dele story I would love him to expose the media company who was pestering Everton with the veiled threat.

On a side issue do you think Bill Kenwright has been sharing the room with Dele - it would mea we would need to respect his recovery period - and the fact that he forget to post that statement

Haven’t seen the interview yet, but will deffo give it look, though I think all the main bits have been covered in the media.

Meanwhile, he’s out of contract at the end of this season. I wonder if a deal can be struck with Spurs and Dele himself, where Spurs waive half the £10m quid for playing 20 matches, and Dele waives half his £5m wages for the season. So there is less pressure on the decision whether to play him or not - it costs us a maximum of £7.5m to give him every opportunity to play - and surely that would be better for his mental health? The situation at the moment means he has to be absolutely brilliant in training to get more than a handful of appearances.

Lots of fine words from everyone in the football world so far, but fine words are not a practical solution.

it would be good, but in the greed days of football that we are now in... unlikely.

He has 9 games to prove he's worth 10M.

..I hope he does it

As a side note. Which utter simpleton negotiated that contract for us? It’s pure desperation from a relegation zone team. That said, he did keep us up with his clever block on Marc Guehi for Dom’s third goal vs palace, so maybe it all worked out.

He will likely never play for us for financial reasons and will go on to be an absolute world class midfielder for someone like Brentford.

Watched the interview (sponsored by a betting company, naturally). He's obviously been through some very dark times but seems to be in a much better place now. Hopefully he gets back to playing like he can (for us - hopefully we have £10m budgetted - or someone else) but more importantly he continues the progress he's made with his mental health.

And there you go...just read this in a Guardian piece about Dele. This is what I thought - it's not so much that Jose is an uncaring bastard, more that someone like Dele, with his issues, needs a certain kind of manager and mentor. It's not Mourinho's fault that he's not necessarily that kind of bloke, and he may well have gone out of his way to help Dele, but just not in the way that Dele needed. As per the end of the quote below, it's just an accident of circumstances.

Bit late on this but looks like we've attempted to get spurs to drop the £10m clause in his contract after he plays 20 games. After everything he's been through and spoken about would be a great bit of PR for both clubs if he could get up and running here.

Bit late on this but looks like we've attempted to get spurs to drop the £10m clause in his contract after he plays 20 games. After everything he's been through and spoken about would be a great bit of PR for both clubs if he could get up and running here.
Is he not playing because of that clause or are there other reasons, e.g., he's not fit, or he's injured?
