Sunderland have completed the signing of free agent James McFadden on a short-term contract, following his recent spell on trial at the club.

McFadden, 29, who has been training with the Black Cats for a number of weeks since his six-month spell at Everton ended last summer, will sign a three-month deal.

But Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has not ruled out extending the contract should the former Birmingham player impress at the Stadium of Light.

"That's the idea of taking him, and that's his idea of signing for us, that he feels he is capable of doing it," O'Neill said.

"Now, whether it's the James McFadden of old, which would be good news for us, that's something we will have to wait and see."

McFadden has been capped 48 times by Scotland in a career that has seen him represent Motherwell, Everton and Birmingham.

I think this will be his last club in the Prem. After this it'll be the Championship, or more likely, back to Scotland.

Motherwell have appointed former Scotland forward James McFadden as assistant manager.

The club turned to McFadden, who will also register as a player, after Stephen Robinson left the role to take over at Oldham earlier this month.

McFadden, 33, is going through his coaching badges with the Scottish FA but has signed a deal until the end of the season.

Motherwell have sacked manager Mark McGhee after what they describe as a "disappointing" run of poor results.

The 59-year-old Scotland assistant boss leaves his second stint at Fir Park with the club 10th in the Premiership.

Motherwell have won just two of their past 13 league games and lost 5-1 at home to Dundee on Saturday.

Coach Stephen Robinson will take temporary charge, with help from assistant James McFadden and under-20s boss Stephen Craigan.
