I mean it could serve to make Seamus Coleman feel a bit younger, but other than that it feels pretty depressing. Having said that, I'm now convinced most everton transfer stories are simply written by an AI aggregating all the possible links and using extremely vague language to associate them with us, so probably nothing to worry about.

Deal agreed, pending medical.
I guess we really are in the shit financially. Would explain why we let Coady and Mina go then.

Hopefully he's just back-up for van den Hauwe and Sheedy.

OK so this is where we are. Ashley Young.
Objectively, it's not a bad signing for a season. We are living hand-to-mouth at the moment, the big spending days are long gone. He's a good back-up, fit and available to play more often than not, and in fact he may well breeze past Myko as first choice without too much effort.
It's just what the signing represents, that's what is depressing. Confirmation of what we all feared. Make do and mend.

Lol this is funny. Dyche and Young played together at Watford for two seasons.
Re: 18 - Ashley Young - Zimmer framed
fucking appalling ....and downright embarrassing
..and I bet we give him a 5 year deal too

Ok, sensible brain on. He was still playing regularly for a villa team which got into europe last season, and in the second half of the season were top 4 in terms of results. Even bagged a goal, iirc. We are weak at left back and he can do a job. As Rotts says, this is where we are, the salad days are over and it's austerity everton for the foreseeable.
And fair play to anyone who keeps themself fit enough to still be playing top-level footy at 38.

however I can't stop myself thinking we'd be better off with Jonjoe Kenny

I was going to ask what had happened to Niels Nkonkou, but he signed for St Etienne (the club, not the band) recently. Another one who didn't make it.
Myko is ok and probably needs replacing at some point but he's reasonably solid. Presumably if Myko is fit, Young will just be cover and we'll see as much of him as we did Vinagre last season. In which case it is probably sensible business, saving our pennies for where we really need it.

Is there a valid claim under the Trade Descriptions Act? Young? really?

I saw Nkounkou play a couple of times and, while it's harsh to judge a young lad on two games, I came to a pretty rapid conclusion that he was lively going forward but couldn't defend. Now a lot of full backs can't defend these days, they're often auxiliary attackers more than defenders, but we can't afford that luxury right now. If Nkounkou was at Finch Farm today, Dyche would be looking to ship him on tomorrow. Not his type at all IMO. He worked hard enough but didn't have the defensive nous.
Also, I suspect we will see plenty of Ashley Young. He'll have a very good chance of becoming first choice LB.

Ok, after sleeping on it, I agree. This could be the missing piece of the jigsaw. We're gonna win the league!

Re: 18 - Ashley Young - Zimmer framed
Done deal apparently. Medical passed, SAGA insurance forms signed, sheltered housing accommodation secured, complimentary bingo club membership paid for by the club, and apparently he's already asked Doris where she hangs out. Let's go.
Concerns about transfer funds aside, I think this is a better signing than most of Everton Twitter seems to think. It's not exciting but we need plenty more bodies, and he has experience and a bit of class. Echoes of the Richard Gough signing, when we were similarly fucked financially.

Ashley Young has become Everton’s first signing of the summer on a free transfer, agreeing a one-year deal until the end of June 2024.

Positives: Experience, will challange for the starting LB spot, can run faster than me.Made 4 Gwladys wrote:Ashley Young has become Everton’s first signing of the summer on a free transfer, agreeing a one-year deal until the end of June 2024.

Negatives: Old, uncertainties as to why Villa let him go.
Assessment: Probably a decent signing.
Re: 18 - Ashley Young - Zimmer framed
Villa fan view:
“ Was really good in his second coming at Villa. Incredible to still be performing at this level.
Will be solid for you. Still a bit disappointed we didn't keep him around in a coaching / mentor role for another year.”
