Everton are hopeful of completing the signing of Lille midfielder Amadou Onana, reports The Times.

Sky Sports News reported on Wednesday that West Ham had agreed a £33million fee with Lille for the 20-year-old Belgian, but reports have surfaced in France suggesting Everton have reached a similar agreement with the Ligue 1 club.

Everton’s pursuit of Onana comes alongside bids to bring Idrissa Gueye back to Goodison Park from Paris Saint-Germain, while the Toffees are working on a deal to sign Wolves centre-back Conor Coady.

Talks are progressing quickly between Everton and Lille over the transfer of midfielder Amadou Onana.

The two clubs have agreed a fee for the 20-year-old Belgian and the player is on Merseyside to undergo a medical.

Everton will hope to complete the deal done by midday on Friday so Onana is eligible for their Premier League opener against Chelsea, live on Saturday Night Football on Sky Sports.

West Ham had a fee of £33.5million agreed with Lille but personal terms with the player proved an issue, since then Everton have moved to close in on bringing Onana to Goodison Park

I'm excited about this one. He looks very good, and he only turns 21 in a couple of weeks time. Although he's touted as being a DM, he looks more box to box to me and, since he's very keen to work with Lampard, that might be how he sees himself.

We're going to have to give him time, which obviously most footie fans are not good at doing, but if we pull this one off it will be a statement of intent.

Downsides: he's injured Rolling Eyes Mad he might turn out to be shit 8 - Amadou Onana - he's HUGE ! Confused he's supposedly asking for silly money considering how little experience he has 8 - Amadou Onana - he's HUGE ! WELCOME TO EVERTON BIG MAN cheers cheers

Belgium international Amadou Onana has signed for Everton from LOSC Lille for an undisclosed fee, agreeing a five-year contract until the end of June 2027.

The 20-year-old central midfielder – considered one of Europe’s most exciting talents – becomes the Blues’ fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of defenders James Tarkowski and Rúben Vinagre, forward Dwight McNeil and centre-back Conor Coady.

Powerful, fast, technically skilled and with the ability to be used in a range of central-midfield roles, Onana revealed the chance to play for manager Frank Lampard, passionate Evertonians and ‘one of the biggest clubs in England’ were key to him committing his long-term future to Everton.

“It feels great to join Everton. I know it’s a big, big club, one of the biggest in England,” Onana told evertontv. “It’s something I want to be part of for many years.

“Everyone here showed they really wanted me and they have a plan for me, so I really appreciated the talks I had with the manager and Director of Football [Kevin Thelwell]. They told me how they wanted me to play and I enjoyed it.

“They both have a lot of ambition and that’s the type of guy I am so it matches.

“The manager was one of the big reasons. He played at the highest level, won many things and was a midfielder, too. It means a lot to have interest from him and I think he can teach me many things.

“The Everton fans are amazing. I saw their support last season and it’s also one of the reasons why I chose Everton. I am looking forward to meeting them at Goodison and, just hearing about the atmosphere, I get goosebumps.

“Blue is my favourite colour, too! I am going to give everything for the Club and our supporters.”

Watched a video of him on youtube and much of it was him intercepting terrible passes, or alternatively having amazing positional awareness. I wasn't able to work out which as I watch so little football these days. He does have a right long pair of legs on him, though. He'll win plenty of takles and probably get a good few cards as well.

New signing Amadou Onana has chosen to wear Everton’s number eight shirt – and has revealed the basketball legend who inspired his selection.

The late Kobe Bryant is one of Onana’s sporting idols, with the LA Lakers great having worn the number for the first 10 years of his pro career before switching to 24 – the number Onana donned at Lille and previously at Hamburg.

Bryant’s legacy at LA Lakers is underlined by the fact the eight and 24 jerseys have been retired by the franchise in his honour.

On the responsibility of wearing number eight for Everton, Onana said: “Yes, it’s a big number. It’s a heavy one.

“The history behind it is that I am a big, big fan of Kobe Bryant. His work ethic and the way he was [inspired me].

“I’ve wore his numbers [in the past]…the 24 I had before and now the number eight, so I am happy to have that number for Everton.”

Fabian Delph was the latest Everton player to wear number eight. During the Premier League era, the likes of Paul Rideout, Graham Stuart, Tomasz Radzinski, Ross Barkley and Andy Johnson have donned the shirt.

I heard he's a bit of a wanker;

Genesis 38:8-10
New International Version
8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.

There's a great bideo on the OS today, following Onana on his journey to Finch Farm and Goodison. He comes across as the most self-confident, charismatic young man, but the best bit is when he goes into the gym near the end and they're pumping out the Rhianna song "Oh-na-na, What's my name?" on the speakers.

I have a very good feeling about this signing. So he'll probably break his leg scoring an own goal, ten minutes into his debut.

Post  Rotterdam 1985 Fri 19 Aug 2022, 1:33 am

Listen, I've been doing a bit of research into this lad - vids and articles - and I'm really quite excited about him. Maybe I'm overdoing this due to the paucity of genuine talent in our team, but to quote Morrissey, I need to cling to something.

I didn't see the Villa game while I was on holiday, I understand that it was an eventful first 10 minutes for him, good and bad. But my gut feeling based on what I now know is that he could be the sort of player who can own and dominate games Vieira-style, just what we need. He's a bloke who you can build a team around. I hope he starts against Forest.

Striker issues notwithstanding, the addition of Onana, Tarkowski and Coady brings a lot of character and leadership to this team, something we've been desperately lacking for years. I always look back to the mid-80's team and think of the number of potential captains we had back then - Ratcliffe, Sharp, Reid, Southall, Gray, Psycho Pat, Watson. We may not have been better technically or ability-wise than Liverpool, United and Spurs during that period, but that team had so many leaders ready to go into battle, metaphorically speaking, and I'm sure that gave us an edge. The Bayern Munich second leg and Luton cup semi are prime examples of where we simply would not be denied thanks to the attitude of the collective. They'd have happily shed blood for each other.

Look at United now - a collection of poncy individuals that cost half a billion quid who don't understand the very ethic of team sport. We ourselves have been like that for years. Football as warfare - anyone who has ever played the game at any level would have looked around at their team-mates from time to time, say if they're into extra time in a cup semi, and known who they were going into battle with. If you have the right characters around you, it gives you a massive boost and elevates your own game. The very essence of team sport - do it for your mates. Luis Diaz showed this for the Shite at the weekend - as soon as Nunez got sent off, Diaz took the game by the scruff of the neck, very impressive.

Also character, leadership and professionalism can often make up for a lack of natural talent - which is how the likes of James Milner and Gary Neville have such successful careers. I desperately want this to be a gamechanger of a signing. If he starts against Forest, I'm sticking a tenner on him for first goal.

Having written all that, knowing our luck, he'll shred his achilles in the 7th minute. I'm visualising that moment now. Fucking hell I'm sick of talking like this. When will some luck go our way?

Amadou Onana made more successful ball recoveries (9), made more successful tackles (7/7), won more defensive aerial duels (2/3), attacking aerial duels (1/2) and won more ground duels (8/11) than any other Everton player against Liverpool.

Arsenal and Chelsea interested in him apparently. Gutting as he's clearly going to be a proper player. It's saying something about the state of the club that we're being asset stripped before weve even been relegated.

I think we are well capable of selling these two... and bringing in someone even worse than Arnautovic... someone more Maupeydick or McWank standard like Dele Ali back from loan ... he'll be like a new signing
