4 - Mason Holgate (Another bargain from Barnsley)
Mason Holgate followed in the footsteps of Jones Stones, who ironically was in the throes of a transfer saga to Chelsea as Holgate joined Everton. And who should he involved against in his first match for Everton? Why Barnsley, of course, at Oakwell in the League Cup, where John Stones was widely believed to be making his last appearance for the Royal Blues in a saga that saw Everton resist all efforts to pry him away.
Holgate, who can play at centre-half or right-back, was handed his professional debut by the Tykes in December 2014 and went on to make 20 appearances in League One and two in the FA Cup that term. Holgate would be an unused sub in that Barnsley game for Everton and would only appear on the siubs bench for a couple of Premier League games at the senior level in his first season at Goodison Park, but was a regular for the David Unsworth's Under-21s.
The BBC did a spot on him on MOTD, saying he is another golden Everton find.

Holgate apparent for sale for £8m?
While it appears that we can never have enough midfielders, it looks like Defenders are no longer required at the club (if you believe the Daily Mail)

Yes, definitely one of the madder rumours. We've loaned out Kenny - out most experienced cover at right-back - so let's sell the only cover we have in central defence, who is doubling as our only cover at right back? I don't think so. Still, Lewis Gibson must be thinking about going in to ask for a pay-rise, cos he's going to be our senior defensive cover!

Makes more sense now - looks like we're getting French right-back Sidibe. I guess Silva doesn't rate Holgate as either a right-back or a central defender (nor do I for that matter), so he'll be shipped out. Gbamin can also play central defence, but I still think we'll be bringing in one more in that position - maybe one of ManUre's cast-offs. Still would like to see a winger or creative midfielder coming in - with Lookman gone, Bolasie on the way out, Vlasic gone, Mirallas on the way out, we're starting to look a bit light in that department.

That works too.

He’s done well in the last few games and after his performance v Man Utd he can also slot into another position. I wouldn’t sell unless they’re offering a lot more.

Mason Holgate has completed a loan move to Southampton for the 2023/24 season.
The 26-year-old defender joins the Championship club for the remainder of the campaign, having made 149 appearances during his eight years with the Blues.
Holgate, who signed for Everton from Barnsley in August 2015, previously spent the second half of the 2018/19 season on loan at West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

Hope does ok. I think he's a decent defender but too much of a hot-head to be trusted in the first team.

Re: 4 - Mason Holgate (Another bargain from Barnsley)
Everton are ready to recall defender Mason Holgate in the January transfer window due to a lack of action at Southampton and loan him to another club.

I saw online last night on X, I think it was, that he's allegedly on £75k/wk. Nuts.

Actually think this is cute fro Everton. We sent Holgate out to get the playing time. If he is not getting it then the deal is not being met. I am thinking of the comments that Dyche made about everyone in the squad being "Ready to Play" - to be in the best shape. Sure Holgate is a layer below that but the maxim still holds.
I thought some time ago that Everton would do well to think about how they handled Moyes - I really like the idea of Dyche being here for as long as Moyes was and even longer especially if we can be as patient. He is the epitome of how we want the club to be managed - authentic, effort-based development. We can foot-by-foot climb back to the upper echelons. I hope Dyche will realise the opportunity he has to be a manager at that big successful club is actually us.
He is a very good man-manager. The collective appears to be stronger than it has for some time.

I'd love to see him at Everton for a long time as well. He has that rugged Everton way about him, in my opinion. And he's a good manager on top of it all. Long may it continue.Da Judge wrote:Knight of Thorgothshire wrote:I saw online last night on X, I think it was, that he's allegedly on £75k/wk. Nuts.

Eventually Coleman will probably join the coaching staff. If there was ever a man manager ninth making it's Seamus, As for Colgate, is SD preparing for the transfer of Godfrey and has Colgate lined for bench use?

Clever. Get him off the payroll for a bit and get United’s relegation sealed.
