Everton are also taking a cautious approach with England defender Phil Jagielka, who has missed the last six matches with a hamstring problem.
"It's important that with the amount of games we will be experiencing that we look after Phil and make sure he is allowed to build a good degree of match fitness," Martinez added.
(Meaning - Stones played better than Jags, and we'll use his injury as an excuse)

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, 23, could end an absence of more than three months by returning from a thigh injury to face Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Re: Tipster 2013-14 Season Thread
The last time we were setting ourselves up for a big big game was cup semi-final against the Pool and we all know what happened there. This time it maybe different for a few reasons.
1. We don't have an underlying psychologically fear of Arsenal as we do against Shite. Yes they beat us badly in the cup but that was a distorted scoreline. For 80 minutes it was end to end. The 1-1 score in November is a better reflection of where the teams are at.
2. Martinez doesn't know the meaning of 'we have we hold' philosophy of the previous manager so expect an open end to end encounter.
3. Barkley, FooFoo, Lukaku, ghosh, even Nais are all bang in form and hungry for success. Stones is getting better by the week.
4. Arsenal are looking behind them, we are looking up. Psychologically, its always easier to come late from behind rather then try stay out in front.
5. Bonus zone. While a lot is riding on the result, I think to finish 4th would be an unbelievable achievement. The fans expect but the players should play with the freedom that we are still very much the outsiders to make top 4 while it is critical for Arsenal that they don't fuck up.
6. Arsenal to shut up shop? A point would probably be good enough for Arsenal but is it in their DNA to play defensively? I don't think so so plenty of space for us to exploit.
7. The Goodison factor. We are long overdue a red hot encounter to get the blood pumping at GP. While its not mid-week under the lights affair that we specialise in, the crowd still is a significant factor and hopefully will act as the 12th man.
8. Martinez factor. Unerring ability to turn things around or make changes at pivotal moments. Expect him to unleash the likes of Nais, McGeady or Mirallas just at the right time if needed.
9. Arsenals form. Struggling to find consistency from one week to the next. Leaking goals at Stamford Bridge and Anfield points the way for Everton. Get stuck in early, put them on the back foot and hold onto the ball. Cant hurt us it they don't have it.
10. Victory breaths confidence. 5 wins in a row, some from very sticky situations or late on is bound to give the players confidence. Coupled with a manager who lets them play with the handbrake off, we might finally be able to win a big match with style.

My concern is that both Fulham and Toon created lots of chances against us. Fortunately they are both too shit to take them but Arsenal aren't. We'll have to score at least 2, maybe 3, in order to win imo.

could indeed be a high scoring game ... we'll need Kone to be on top form to win this oneArmchair Evertonian wrote:My concern is that both Fulham and Toon created lots of chances against us. Re: Tipster 2013-14 Season Thread
A win is a must, a draw just about acceptable, and I'm talking about keeping Big Luke and Barry interested until the end of the season.
If CL footy looks almost impossible after Sunday, the likes of Barry, Luke and Foofoo will be thinking of next year elsewhere.
We'll likely fall away and open the door to Moyes's bunch.
So COYBs it is then!!
A call to arms Blue Boys!!!

This is what's worrying me about all the fourth place excitement. Now we've got ourselves in a position where it's a possiblity, I do worry that if we don't make it, it'll lead to an exodus of our best players. In a weird way, we'd have been better off not dreaming, and just battling to a fifth or sixth place finish. That way, Bobby could have said "next year we'll push on" and the players would have bought into it. Cos it's been hyped up this year, not finishing 4th might feel like a failure, the end of the road.
