It's hard when you get the sort of injuries he had at such a young age. Very few youngsters have got the mental strength to keep their focus when they're earning a fortune but haven't yet done anything to really deserve it. You spend a year on the treatment table and, unless you're someone special, it's all gone - the hunger (except for pies), the fight, the concentration, the belief. Especially where he was - in the time he went from bright prospect to sick-note, Citteh had changed beyond all recognition and he would have had to fight for his place against some of the biggest names in the world. If his confidence was shot, he was fucked.

Sad story really. He should have stayed at Goodison, Moyes would have sorted him out.

Paid off by Citteh. Supposedly, neither Hughes nor Mancini thought he had the personality to be a professional footballer. Like most things in life, it's not just about natural ability, it's about how you apply yourself.

I didn't realise he was one of ours. Looks like he could do with some help.

I'm pretty sure he was never with us too.

Joined City at 16 as a schoolboy from Everton apparently. Never knew that. Looks like Moyes had him worked out even then.

Michael Johnson asks to be 'left alone to live the rest of my life' after revealing to the Manchester Evening News the tortured battle with inner demons which has led to him being released by Manchester City.

The midfielder, once tipped to be an England captain and hailed as 'the new Colin Bell', says he has been undergoing treatment for several years at the Priory Clinic, which specialises in dealing with mental illness, alcoholism and gambling addiction.

Asked whether he had a message to City fans, Johnson, a product of the club's academy, says: "I am more disappointed than anyone but that's the way it goes."

The polar opposite of Tim Cahill who was limited in actual ability but would run through a wall for any team he plays for.

Just hope he is sensible with his pay off.
