Bluejagz wrote:Again, nothing to get really worked up about here. Thought he looked decent for Wigan all season. Scored just as much as Vic, Nais & Jelly all together last season? Fee is a bit high but if Alcatraz comes in free as well then its ok. We need to add depth to the squad and these two will do ok for starters.
Martinez will need some one will a bit of star quality thought to get us really up for the season.
Agree with all of that mate. Obviously Martinez knows him well and thinks that he will add something to the side. I am not getting over excited by him signing but I am also not pissed off as we have been crying out for a striker and he could well be the answer (maybe not but I am willing to give the lad a go).
We already have a solid defense and hopefully the likes of Pienaar and Mirallas can link up with Kone to get us a few goals this season. Kone has looked good in a pretty shit side so hopefully he can do even better in a better side.

Bollocks. The fucking Barcodes are bound to outbid Broke Bill, and another one slips through the net. We'll start the season with Jelli and Vic battling it out for the striker position We're doomed etc etc

Proven PL goalscorer for £5m? Who would you sign?

Kone, would only be a short term option as it was said on here yesterday by I believe yourself. Personally if we can't afford a decent striker Martinez should give Vellios a bit more playing time. number 1 priority should be to get cover for Howard.

Agree to an extent and I wouldn't be gutted if we bought Kone, but what we really should be doing is trying to spend £8-12 million on a young, quality striker - probably from Europe (in the Lukaku/Benteke vein). Vellios needs to go on loan for a bit and see how he does week in week out. It's one thing scoring a few goals from the subs bench and quite another starting a game and leading the line.

Have to disagree there. Priority number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc is to get a goalscorer, proven at the top level. That was the only position that really did for us last season. For example, the last game of the season at Chelsea - Jelli takes one of his easy chances we get a point, takes two of them and we win. And that was the story across half a dozen games at least.

I think we should definitely sign the £20m rated, not for sale, Lukaku. What's wrong with Bill, letting Martinez go chasing £5m footballers, when he should be making bids with money we don't have for players who aren't for sale?
Re: 9. Arouna Kone - the curse of the 9 shirt and a bad haircut
David Villa is available ... he's a bit older than Kone... but tons better ... he'd give us 2-3 years & probably 20 goals a season ... should get him for 5Millhairy cataract wrote:Made 4 Gwladys wrote:David Villa ... and yes to Lukaku.. if we sign him I'll run around the block naked shouting yessssssssssssssSaccum Praestigiatorum wrote:hairy cataract wrote:sefton wrote:hairy cataract wrote:Made 4 Gwladys wrote:Made my day ... Villa is 31, he earns £140,000 a week, and Barca want £12m for him.

offer them 6 Million + Naismith... I'm sure the player would accept a wage drop to meet our structure, simply because it will give the chance to work with a manager who has won a FA cup

I just assumed it was every players dream to work with Alan Pardew and Joe Kinnear, but it appears I was wrong.

Both Kone and Whelan are looking for more money, Whelan is just creating a bidding war between clubs ,I would tell Whelan & Kone to Fuck off simples.

good analysis but hairy had already summed all that up by saying "we can't afford a £20m striker"

I thought that was a really good analysis. The stats are pretty good, better than our current strikers in every department except Vic's winning headers which, as he said, was possibly because we lump it and Wigan don't.
Nail on head, for me. We need someone immediately, and he's probably the safest bet, and definitely better than anything we currently have.
