Post  The President Thu 26 Aug 2010, 6:00 am

This is the most-played fixture in the English top flight: this will be the 191st meeting between the two sides.

The last three league meetings between Villa and Everton have ended in a score draw.

The Villans are unbeaten in eight league meetings with Everton.

Tim Cahill has scored four goals in his last four games against Aston Villa in all competitions.

Villa have lost three of their last four Premier League games.

Everton have failed to score in their last two away matches.

Despite taking a penalty, John Carew is yet to get any of his eight shots in the league this season on target.

Three of Everton’s last five league goals have come in the 90th minute or later.

If Everton win this game, the league head to head record will be even between the sides, with 71 wins each.

Since 1987 Everton have won just once away from home at Villa.

Everton have drawn 9 of their last 9 games against Midland teams.

2-2

We go 2-0 up in the first half goals from Cahill and Felliani. There are post about us winning the league, the best midfield in the world, Beckford to score 30 goals this season etc. The in the second half we bottle it.

From Lawro

Aston Villa v Everton (1600 BST)

This will be the last game for more than two weeks for Villa because after the international break they don't play until the Monday. So it's make or break for caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald. It's strange because his first two games resulted in a comfortable win against West Ham and a decent performance with a shadow team in Vienna, but then they were completely taken apart by Newcastle and Andy Carroll.

They're playing an Everton team that have stuttered so far but they always give you a thorough examination. Home advantage could prove telling but it's a really close call. You wouldn't be too surprised if Villa won and likewise if Everton took all three points. I think the Villa players may be aware that it might be MacDonald's last chance to secure the job on a permanent basis and that may prove the difference.

Prediction: 2-1

MATCH PREVIEW
Trounced on Tyneside and then bounced out of Europe by rapid-fire Vienna, it has been a chastening week for Aston Villa and Kevin MacDonald.

I have never been told I was first choice and expect nothing to change until after the game on Sunday. It is not about me but how the players and the football club react

Aston Villa caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald
A new broom is needed at Villa Park, and the caretaker's chances of permanently replacing Martin O'Neill might depend on whether he can sweep away the debris from the last two results.

Amid this period of uncertainty, a fixture against Everton provides a semblance of normality. As every pub bore knows, the two clubs have met more times than any other in the top flight. Villa are a single win ahead, and nothing much seems to separate these two teams of late.

They have been side by side in the higher echelons of the table for much of the last three years, and there has been no shortage of dramatic encounters in that time. The previous three meetings have been drawn, with Villa coming from behind on each occasion, while a stoppage-time goal from Ashley Young provided the last decisive result in this fixture two seasons ago.

Everton have only managed a point from their opening two games, and must win to avoid their worst start for more than a decade. Having ruled out any interest in the Villa job, visiting manager David Moyes could now also end MacDonald's prospects.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

• This is the most-played fixture in the English top flight. Villa have 71 wins to Everton's 70 from the previous 190 league meetings.

• Villa are unbeaten in their last eight league games against Everton (W3, D5).

• Everton's only league victory at Villa Park in the last 22 attempts was a 3-1 success in February 2005.

Aston Villa

• Villa have conceded 20 goals in their last 10 league matches. They had only conceded that many goals in their previous 24 matches.

• They have twice suffered a six-goal margin of defeat in their last 10 league matches: 7-1 at Chelsea and 6-0 at Newcastle. They had previously gone 24 years without losing by six goals in the top flight.

• John Carew has scored four goals in his last five league matches against Everton.

• Stewart Downing will be making the 250th start of his club career.

Everton

• Everton have not failed to win at least one of their first three league matches since 1999.

• They have not won in their last seven league visits to Birmingham, drawing the last four. Their last victory was 1-0 at Birmingham City in October 2004.

• Tim Cahill needs to score twice to register a century of league goals. He has scored three goals in Everton's last two visits to Villa Park.
