for a free transfer i'd take him. Albeit he would be behind Yak and Saha (when fit) in the pecking order.

Howard Kendall - Is Jermaine Beckford the man for Everton FC?

It’s been a positive start to the post-season so far for Everton, they seem to be getting the important things right and tying up their main performers on new contracts.

There is a lot to be said for getting players like Cahill, Rodwell, Baines and Arteta sorted out early, because other clubs could try and exploit their positions and offer European football.

I don’t think there will be many looking for a way out of Goodison though, especially given the amount of optimism for next season.

It is less certain on Steven Pienaar’s future. He has decided to see if the World Cup puts him in a stronger bargaining position, which is a gamble.

If he has a great tournament he can probably try and ask for an even better contract from Everton, or another club, but if he doesn’t he would have been better signing what had been offered beforehand.

Everton will do all they can to keep hold of him rightly. But I’m not convinced they should be pushing the boat out to get Leeds’ Jermaine Beckford.

He has some good qualities, and has scored a lot of goals in the third tier but Everton have two proven goal scorers. Yakubu may not have hit the heights this season, but he is a consistent scorer when he is fully fit and fired-up.

Beckford has been around for a while, so other clubs have had plenty of opportunity to go for him.

There’s an element of risk in taking him onboard, but Moyes has a great track record in bringing players from the lower divisions through.

Recruiting players who fit Everton’s wage structure won’t be easy, so perhaps Moyes will cut his cloth once again.

aye but we'd still have to pay the cunts wages. i'd imagine he'll be looking for at least 20k a week that's over a million a year. might have a sell on vlaue of maybe 2mill i suppose but it's hardly guaranteed to be that much if he turns out so pants that we'd be looking to get rid after 1 season

It's great to have squad players, but I really think we need to go for some great players as well. Granted you can make the case that if your midfield is setting up good chances to score even a half decent striker will bury some.

It'll be interesting to see how he pans out (assuming it's true he's having a medical).

I have no objections about us signing Beckford but there is no way that he is good enough to replace the Yak, if he goes. We would still need to spend £10+ on a new striker if Yakubu does go.

I feel the same way. Granted I have never watched him play, but I fear we are going to be very thin up front this year if the Yak goes. The da Silva lad is unproven and it's really hard to know what he will bring to the table.

EVERTON look set to beat Aston Villa in the race to sign Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford.
Beckford, 26, is hot property as he is out of contract after bagging 31 goals last season.

Everton boss David Moyes swooped for Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford yesterday to make him his first signing of the summer. Beckford's move to Goodison has been on and off for months but finally went through after he headed for Merseyside to finalise terms and undergo a medical. Free agent Beckford had rival interest from West Ham but wanted to stay in the north for personal reasons.

Moyes has been tracking Beckford for more than a year and stuck to his guns despite the forward's dip in form as Leeds almost blew automatic promotion in the last couple of months of the campaign. Beckford eventually took Leeds up but he wants to try his luck at Premier League level and has also picked up a contract worth just over £1million-a-year. Moyes is looking to shake up his attack and will let James Vaughan go, while Yakubu could also be sold if West Ham increase their opening offer.
