I think most peoples reaction is "so what?" but it's probably the reaction of the minority that makes this a media event

Good for him, I suppose. Not that I really cared what his sexual orientation was as long as he could play well for us.

I think it's the fact that he's only about the fourth professional footballer to come out, and most of them have only done it when they have retired. Despite all the FA's attempts at "inclusiveness", footballers are amongst the least likely people to say they are gay because of the stigma still attached to it within the game.  It was great that Hitz came out, but it's only when a few current players starting speaking out that the stigma will start to be lifted.

It would be a fantastic boost for young gay men if a player like Rooney or Barkley came out.  In fact, perhaps they should do it even if they aren't gay  Very Happy

A prominent young footballer coming out in 2014 would be the equivalent of an MP coming out in the 1980s.  It really is quite a big deal.

The fact that in general most fans are incredibly narrow-minded and yobbish - puerile and even a hard core of real homophobics. I no longer accept the sometimes peddled notion that agents would advocate against because the harm to the "brand". Rugby Union actually has a club playing in the established leagues that is an openly gay team. Perhaps it is too generalising that RU is more tolerant (after all it will take all shapes, colours and creeds to play).

Sad... but 92 clubs with average squad of say 20 players - its hard to believe that in a total population of nearly 2000 they are all straight. And its an indictment on us (society) that we still create the barrier.

Sadly, I think there are a hell of a lot of sportspeople who are reluctant to " come out " because they fear public opinion
A good friend of mine agonised for months and made himself Ill over wether to tell us, his friends and colleagues. We are taxi drivers, which he felt added to the pressure . Now, he is more himself. I think public figures tend to wait till they slowly go from " stardom " because of what ignorant people think. My personal opinion is, it does not bother me in the slightest, it is the person, NOT the sexual preference.

That does not excuse hairy, with his goat fetish though. THAT, is wrong  Very Happy

I just read it and it quoted him as saying he had never felt uncomfortable and always had the support of the dressing room in England and Germany. That suggests it wasn't a secret amongst players. If that's so, it's quite impressive that it never became public knowledge. Credit to his team mates for that.

Still won't admit to being an ex- West Ham player though. The ridicule would be awful if that came out.

Very Happy  Did you see the highlights of their FA Cup thrashing at Notts Forest? There was some poor kid in the West Ham end crying his eyes out. Imagine how he feels after the latest humiliation at Citteh? That little lad is scarred for life, he's going to end up a serial killer or perhaps even a Red Shite.
