He's one of those players, the type no one notices until he's not in this side. The great thing for us is that he's still young and only going to get better.
So what was RM thinking?
The first time I've second guessed his team selection and gone"WTF"
WE should have started with team that finished.
Why?

Completely agree. If he* can't play two games in the week with a summer's rest to look forward to then how is he (our squad) going to cope with Champions League?

* Not that I'm suggesting that he had anything to do with the decision.

OK, thanks for the info.
Thor you could play for the Oirish national team, criteria are very loose, you only need to match one of the following :
Ever owned an Oirish setter ?
Got a postcard from the old country ?
Own one of those white thick woolen sweaters and/or caps ?
Visited the Emerald Isle and kissed the Blarney Stone ?
Or love gallons of 16: James McCarthy - covers the Earth's surface - Page 4 186792

In fairness Ireland take advantage of the 'grandparent' rule in the same way European teams like France and Belgium take advantage of their colonial past and large influx of immigrants from Africa i.e Zidane, Thuram etc. There is a huge Ireland immigrant population abroad, far more that live in Ireland so that is why you get players like McCarthy & McGeady and other in the past, especially under the Charlton years that see themselves as essentially Irish.

An Irish sounding name usually works as well!

Sup with this?

"Everton midfielder McCarthy, West Ham defender Joey O'Brien - who had already been released from the squad so he could concentrate on his own fitness programme - and Birmingham goalkeeper Darren Randolph are the trio missing from the original 32-man group O'Neill named earlier this month.

There is also no place for Stephen Ireland, despite O'Neill having hinted the Stoke midfielder could be drafted in.

The squad is for four friendlies, against Turkey at the Aviva Stadium on May 25, Italy at Fulham's Craven Cottage on May 31, Costa Rica in Philadelphia on June 6 and Portugal in New Jersey on June 10."

Quite amazing that O'Neil has left McCarthy out ... arguably our best player last season ... Irelands loss, Everton's gain re: rest for the lad

 lol!  16: James McCarthy - covers the Earth's surface - Page 4 Action-s

its just the usual bollox rumour mill, get used to it, its going to be a long summer of teams being linked to Everton's emerging squad because 1) some of them qualify as home grown players for uefa rules and 2) other teams need to improve their teams / squads

so the media are putting 1) + 2) together and trying to link them despite the fact the players love working under Martinez cos he is allowing them to develop, so why would they go and sit on a bench somewhere instead? usual madness from the media.

Paper talk, shite obviously. On the other hand, how many people on this forum spent the first half of last season moaning about how ridiculously over-priced he was? Hmmm, rated at £25m now…. Very Happy

Post  Barry Horne's Equaliser Sat 26 Jul 2014, 9:31 am

Can't see him leaving to be honest. He doesn't strike me as the kind of player to kick up a fuss and demand a transfer - look at how loyal to Wigan he was! From what we know, we're not in a position where we have to sell, he has a good relationship with the manager and he's been touted as a future Everton captain. Unless a crazy, crazy offer comes in I'm sure he'll still be an Everton player after the window shuts.
