Will it be a case of 5th time lucky when we entertain Newcastle United this coming weekend? We have to go back to the 1994/95 under Mike Walker for a worse start to the season! But we are at home against Newcastle and that has to be a good thing.

We are now 14 home Premier League matches without a defeat and only 3 away from beating our best such run in the Prem of 16 games from April 1999 to March 2000.

Sept 18th is a good date for us to be playing a match, as we are unbeaten in our last 5 games played on this date.

Against Newcastle we’re 5-2-0 in our last 7 played at Goodison, including the win in 2005 which just about guaranteed us a 4th place finish that season.

Hopefully our season starts now, after the comeback against Man Utd at the weekend, and I predict that we will just have enough to finally get our first 3pts of the season.

Everton 3
Newcastle 1

It's difficult to predict Newcastle. They are undoubtedly a very good team as no team storms the Championship like they did without playing well as a unit.
Caroll has showed already this season that if you give him an inch he will take full advantage. They're not in form at the moment, as their run of LLLWDL shows. They've played the same teams as we have in Villa, Wolves, United and Blackpool with only a burn and a pool to differentiate.
We can't succeed this season unless we start scoring goals and so far after 4 games our strikers have scored a grand total of NONE. We can call Cahill a striker and say he has scored 2 but that would be scratching the bottom a bit. If we were away I would have concerns but seeing as we are at home I'm confident we can win 6-0 as we haven't lost against a team beginning with the letter N since Oct 2007. cheers

STEVEN PIENAAR today warned the rest of the Premier League that Everton’s lowly position in the table will be short-lived.

The South African declared that taking full points from home games is the squad’s primary aim, and ear-marked Newcastle United on Saturday as the Blues first scalp of the campaign.

Pienaar is still confident that Everton can compete for a top five place despite their sluggish start, and admitted he has taken note of slips by their rivals.

He said: “It is up to the players mentally to go out on Saturday and start from scratch. We need all three points. It is far too early to look at the table. The teams above us only have two or three points more than us. There have been a few slip-ups.

“Spurs, Man City and Liverpool have all dropped points and if we win on Saturday we will be back up there.

“We are just going to go into the game like all the other games – prepare well and make sure we get three points. We won’t underestimate them and we will try to start the game well.

“As long as we don’t drop points at home, that is important. The supporters will still have the feeling of Saturday’s game in them, so they can push us again.”

The Blues welcome Chris Hughton’s side to Goodison Park with two draws and two defeats from their four league outings so far this term.

Pienaar hit his first goal of the season in the 3-3 draw with Manchester United and looked back to his best, working tirelessly and combining well with Leighton Baines.

He said: “When I went to the World Cup I was feeling tired but now I feel much better. It is down to the players if they have the desire to push themselves the following season and I think all the players that came back have that desire to do well.”

Meanwhile, James Vaughan admitted he would extend his loan spell at Crystal Palace after marking his home debut with a hat-trick on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old is due to return to Everton in December but has indicated that he would be happy to prolong his stay at Selhurst Park.

He said: “I was definitely pushing to come and play some games. I think I got my wish. At the moment I just want to get the games under my belt.”

Asked whether he would like to remain beyond the three-month loan deal, the striker said: “Definitely. It’s a great club, I’m enjoying it. There’s great quality in the squad so I don’t see why not.”

Palace manager George Burley added: “James was excellent for us. I feel that he will do very well for us.

“He’s a very good striker, he’s young and hungry.”

Lawro predicts.....

Everton v Newcastle

I was really surprised that Newcastle, who know they have to beat the sides around them to stay up this season, slipped up against Blackpool.

Matt Gilks was astounding in the Blackpool goal and it's a great win for them.

Newcastle come up against a Everton side who will be on a high because of the two late goals they scored against Manchester United and I think the Toffees will have too much quality for Chris Hughton's side.

Prediction: 3-1

Post  Hinchcliffe Corner on Sat 18 Sep 2010, 2:20 pm

Everton boss David Moyes has made just one change from the side that drew 3-3 with Manchester United for this afternoon's home game against Newcastle.

Tim Cahill, who played as a striker against the Red Devils, misses out with a knee injury and is replaced up front by Jermaine Beckford.

The Blues are unchanged in defence with Leighton Baines, Sylvain Distin, Phil Jagielka and Tony Hibbert making up the back four.

John Heitinga continues to anchor the midfield with Mikel Arteta, Marouane Fellaini, Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar ahead of him and behind lone frontman Beckford.

Academy prospect Ross Barkley is on the bench for a Premier League game for the first time and is joined by returning club captain Phil Neville.

The visitors hand maiden starts to recent signings Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheik Tiote.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Baines, Heitinga, Jagielka, Arteta, Distin, Beckford, Pienaar, Osman, Fellaini. Subs: Mucha, Bilyaletdinov, Neville, Gueye, Coleman, Yakubu, Barkley

Newcastle: Harper, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Nolan, Williamson, Barton, Carroll, Routledge, Perch, Titote, Ben Arfa. Subs: Campbell, Lovenkrands, R.Taylor, Smith, Gutierrez, Ameobi, Krul.
